She began her career in the industry in the early years, having won local competitions at the age of 10, and recording for the first time when she was 14 years old. In 1985, she joined Rounder Records and in 1987 released her debut solo album. The group she joined was who she still performs, Alison Krauss Union Station. The group released their debut album in the year 1989.
