Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency the website which includes videos and comments on depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic who has been awarded awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in popular culture narratives. Alongside working to bring awareness to the targeted and sexist attack on women and other minorities in online spaces she is committed to breaking down stereotypes that are associated with popular culture. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. While still at school in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. It was a girl who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet that would examine how gender is represented in games. But, she was victimized by online harassment. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered the determination of feminist media critic. In recognition of the many accomplishments she's made to feministism, she's recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit that explores the representations of women within pop media narratives.
